In My Words, by Miranda

You’re probably wondering if everyone had a great time here. Well, I didn’t.
I had a superb time! I loved being with the girls in group 5. I liked how I could make everyone in my group laugh and even though I didn’t do it right at all, I liked how the girls taught me how to make a lanyard. I love the lunch times we spent together sipping cappuccinos and laughing. I loved how we made hilarious skits together, totally improved. I loved our free time together, cutting out pictures, singing, talking, listening to music, joking and anything else fun. I loved everything about this place except waking up too early and how early it ended.

My favorite part about this program was using the cameras for anything we wanted to film. Behind the camera was fun because we were all really hyper and crazy, but in front of the big professional camera it was kind of scary because no kind of camera ever filmed me before. It was great after the first couple times in front of that camera because I got to use it. We made bracelets, finger print pictures, collages, mellowed out and took quizzes in the uniquely ME! books and goofed around at the end of the day when the parents started coming. We talked about anger and how to deal with it. We talked about mellowing out and body language. When we had free time, I made lots of bats with expressions and accessories and called them “batfuls”. This program is fun and I would definitely come back next year.

In My Words, by Adriannah

By attending the uniquely ME! Film Institute, I have made a lot of new friends and learned a lot about the behind the scenes work that is involved with media. Editing, filming, white balancing, fire wire are just a few of the techniques I learned about camera work. Another memory that I will always have from being at this camp, is the band that my friends and I put together. It was called the Spicey Ladies. We each had our own spice name and wrote our own songs. This camp absolutely boosted my self-esteem and I made life-long friends that I will never forget and will continue to stay in touch with. I will absolutely go to this Film Institute. I have PMA (positive mental attitude) and I am proud.

I liked being able to use the camera and meeting new people from places you don’t go to everyday. Through the week we did a lot of camera shooting and me and Sheila didn’t like being in front of the camera. (Unfortunately we had to anyways but we easily got over it). Besides camera work, we learned how to deal with stress and being different. We also learned what media was and how commercials put hairspray on hamburgers to make them stick. We went to Nay Aug Park and made bracelets and collages about what we liked. In the uniquely ME! books was like being different, how to deal with stress, etc. That’s what I liked about the Real Girls in Reel Life Film Institute.

My friends and I started the Spicey Ladies. We made our own spiced up music.
All my friends are awesome. We are unique and we have PMA (positive mental
Attitude)! The documentary was cool to make too!

What I did this summer in the uniquely ME! program was to use and learn
video cameras. We got to work in groups so it gave me a better chance to meet people. One of my favorite projects we did was interviewing people. In our spare time some of us liked to doodle these munchkin characters. The field trips were awesome. We went to Nay Aug Park. First, we all took a walk to the newly built tree house, then when it started to rain, we went to the zoo and filmed the animals. Today, we’re all going downtown to use the video cameras one more time. What would make this program better would be to make it last longer than one week!

This camp has been awesome. The best parts were meeting new people and using the cameras. I also really liked the making of the party hats (Celebrating Me). We mostly talked about self-esteem and controlling our anger. The staff and the people I met there I will remember forever.

-Kathleen, 11, Pennsylvania, uniquely ME! Real Girls in Reel Life Summer Film Institute

In My Words, by Jamie

I liked learning how to edit, film and being in front of the camera. We made Party hats, bracelets and necklaces. We talked about PMA (positive mental attitude) in the books. I loved doing the arts and crafts.

In My Words, by Nora

I liked when we went to Nay Aug Park to film the best. I liked being in front of the camera less than being behind it. At first I hated being in front of the camera, but as the week went on I liked it a little more but still not as much as I liked filming. If I had the chance to do this again I would definitely do the camp again.

Camp was really fun. The best thing about it is working with the cameras. I really liked working behind it. We went to the tree house at the park to film which was fun. We learned that we all have something unique about us.

In My Words, by Gabby

This week was most likely the best one week camp I have been to in a long time. I had lots of fun being in front of the camera and behind it. I really liked the fact that the girls had a lot of input into the decisions. The only thing I would have wanted more of would be working behind the camera. Other than that this has been a great experience for me and I hope the program continues and more and more girls come to be involved.

In My Words, by Ariella

I liked when we used the cameras because it was fun to video tape things. Behind the camera was fun because when some one was talking and they messed up, we all started laughing and nobody else would know because they only see what the camera got. We got to make bracelets, collages and we did some work in our books. We talked about anger, confidence, etc.

In My Words, by Taylor

I liked all of the interesting people I met. There’s a good possibility most or all of them are crazy but that’s life for you. I liked being able to express my opinion in front of a camera. I liked being behind the camera best. It’s like writing in that you’re recording an event but much easier. I also liked discussing the media and its symbolism and how it affects us. In the books, we talked about dealing with anger, self-esteem and body language.

-Taylor, 15, Pennsylvania, uniquely ME! Real Girls in Reel Life Summer Film Institute

In My Words, by Sheila

This camp was a blast. It was fun meeting new people and doing the activities with Maureen, Ellen and Andy, the Program Instructors.

The things I liked best about this camp were meeting new people and working with the camera. I liked being behind the camera because I was in control of what we were watching. We made hats and collages and went to Nay Aug Park. We talked about stress and friends in the book.

I had a lot of fun and made a lot of friends. Spicey Ladies rock! I loved making the documentary and doing other activities. Everyone here is so awesome. Maureen is really cool! She did a good job at arranging the program. We all have PMA (positive mental attitude). I have the best kind. Tony’s awesome.

-Candice, 13, Pennsylvania, uniquely ME! Real Girls in Reel Life Summer Film Institute

In My Words, by Elaine

The best thing I liked would be the television show we created, the commercial and "renaming" the camera guys (the interns who helped with the camera work). From behind the camera was very different from being in front of the camera. Behind you had to be really quiet, when in front you can be serious or funny as you want. Lunch was interesting. We would be talking about one thing then out of nowhere the subject would change. I liked visiting the zoo and all the monkeys. Some of them even blew kisses back.

In My Words, by Haley

I had so much fun at this program! I learned how to use a video camera! Now if I get a video camera I will know how to use it. Also, we did little acting activities in the morning which were so much fun.

The thing I liked best about camp was meeting new friends and doing the
Activities with Emy, a College Professor of Communications. I liked being in front of the camera because you can just goof off. The camp counselor I will remember the most is Ellen! This camp was a lot of fun and I am going to miss everyone.

In My Words, by Cassie

I liked when we made videos, collages and bracelets. It was great to express myself in front of the camera. We learned body language, made bracelets, learned editing videos and made collages. I drew animals and things and free wrote.

-Cassie, 11, Pennsylvania, uniquely ME! Real Girls in Reel Life Summer Film Institute

In My Words, by Michele

I really liked the collages. They were a great way to get my feelings out artistically. It was fun to be with the cameras. Personally, I liked cameras, the zoo, friends, colleagues, lanyard, string, monologues, creating a talk show . . . the list goes on. Stress. We talked about how to deal with it. This program was great! I would have loved to stay longer. Maybe two weeks. I don’t mind getting up early to come here.

In My Words, by Nicole

I enjoyed the program. I liked working with the cameras and seeing the editing technology. I was never into computers or technology, but this program has really opened a new door for me. I learned a lot about myself during this program. I also learned about the media and how and why they portray certain things. I met a lot of new people and I had a great time with all of them. I also enjoyed the acting/speaking aspect of making the documentary. The program as a whole was fun and informative. I am glad I had the opportunity to do it.

In My Words, by Julia

I like filming in the park and making the bracelets. I feel it was fun to film and made you feel like you wanted to be silly. I like filming because I knew what was going on. We made bracelets, did games, learned about cameras. We got to write in our journal about what we did or learned.

-Julia, 11, Pennsylvania, uniquely ME! Real Girls in Reel Life Summer Film Institute

In My Words, by Carrie

Being in front of the camera was scary. Being a camera woman was exciting.
We learned a lot about how a camera is used and stuff like that.

I liked working with the cameras the best. When I was in front of the camera
I got really nervous! I found it fun to work with the camera though. We also did some arts and crafts. We did drawings with our fingerprints, collages and bracelets. In the uniquely ME! books we learned how to solve problems.

-Rachel, 12, Pennsylvania, uniquely ME! Real Girls in Reel Life Summer Film Institute

In My Words, by Juliana

Being at this program was a great experience. I loved when we filmed. It was amazing. It was better than being in front of the camera. We formed a bond and talked to Ellen (a Girl Scout staff person) a lot. I like talking about PMA (positive mental attitude). It was fun. This program was altogether amazing.

-Juliana, 13, Pennsylvania, uniquely ME! Real Girls in Reel Life Summer Film Institute

In My Words, By Melissa

What I did during this program is work the right way! I also made new friends. We also made up a group called Spicey Ladies! I had lots of fun telling Tony (one of the interns form the Communication Arts Department who helped us with filming) that whales are real and they move. I had lots of fun at the Real Girls in Reel Life Institute. It was fun to be behind the camera. The uniquely Me! Books were so fun! The best part of the book was PMA (Positive Mental Attitudes). I had the best time at this program and I would come again.

During this program lots of memories and friends were made. The experience of getting to know and understand the process of filming and editing was amazing. The uniquely Me! books brought lots of funny stories and inside jokes. I loved the experience of getting to work and cooperate with the great instructors and my wonderful peers. I hope this program runs again so others can share the same great times! Do you have PMA (Positive Mental Attitudes)?

In My Words, by Angelique

What I liked best at the Real Girls in Real Life Film Institutes was playing with the video cameras, making bracelets and going to the zoo. It was fun for me to be behind the camera rather than in front of it. It was really nervous when I had to read the “I am a Real Girl Monologue” to the camera. We made collages, put on make up and did each others hair, made party hats, drawing in our notebooks and being hyper. We talked about what beauty is, commercials and what makes us all unique. I would definitely come back next year.

In My Words, by Mariel

This week has been a lot of fun. I’ve made new friends, learned new things and learned new things and a lot about myself. The friends I’ve made are the girls that were in my group. We’ve shared many inside jokes and many memories have been made. The things I’ve learned are how to work a camera better. Andy is a great teacher. I’ve learned that my way of letting anger out is wrong. I shouldn’t take it out on other people. All in all, I had a lot of fun and I will definitely come back.

In My Words, by Kaila

In uniquely ME! I learned that every girl has wings. I don’t know about boys, but every girl does. Your wings look one way on good days, and another way on bad days. The color of your angel wings tell you your mood. If you feel like they are red, that could mean you're mad and yellow could mean you’re happy. My angel wings are really dark blue with puppies on it when I am happy and when I’m mad they are dark red.

My favorite thing about uniquely ME! is it’s a girl club and you get to play cool games, you get to meet new friends, and you get a scrapbook just you. My favorite day in uniquely ME! is when we made smoothies and learned about why the ingredients are good for you.

Beauty to me means, well I don’t know what beauty means to me. But I don’t really care how I look. ( Sometimes ).

In My Words, by Melanie

Hi my name is Melanie and I am 9 years old. I live in New Mexico. I went to Once Upon a Time day camp over my spring break. IT WAS REALLY FUN!!! My favorite part was changing our puppet show into a real play and performing it. It made me feel really good that I could act in front of a lot of people and not be too scared. It made me feel really GOOD. I was proud of myself.

I also liked to make new friends. The leaders were very nice and I want to work with them again.
